Alberta Government Job: The Government of Alberta is hiring now for the Ministry of Children’s Services for 5 regions across the Province:

North Region: Includes Edson, Hinton, Whitecourt, Athabasca, Westlock, Barrhead, Lac La Biche, St. Paul, Vegreville, Bonnyville, Cold Lake, Slave Lake, Grande Cache, Grande Prairie, Peace River, High Prairie, High Level, Fairview, Fort McMurray and Valleyview.

Edmonton Region: Includes Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Stony Plain, Leduc, Enoch, and Metis Settlements.

Central Region: Includes Lloydminster, Wainwright, Camrose, Wetaskiwin, Drayton Valley, Rocky Mountain House, Red Deer, Stettler, Drumheller, and Olds.

Calgary Region: Includes Calgary, High River, Airdrie, and Strathmore

South Region: Includes Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Blairmore, Taber, Brooks, and Fort MacLeod.

About the position 

Early intervention, child development, and providing support and services to children, youth, and families are all priorities for Children’s Services. It seeks to provide children in Alberta with the resources they require to flourish in healthy homes and communities. 

The CI Practitioner – Entry Level is a developmental role that will set you on a rewarding career path in Children’s Services. Working with a team of CI professionals, you will expand your knowledge and skills as you work toward being a fully licensed Child Intervention Practitioner.

You will build confidence in your capacity to work collaboratively with families and community partners to create safe environments and identify safety and risk issues within communities and households. 

The Ministry of Children’s Services has several Child Intervention Practitioner – Entry Level job openings around Alberta to fill existing and future vacancies.



Job Requirements

Education: A bachelor’s degree or diploma in social work, with no prior experience, or equivalency as specified below, is necessary.

  • A university degree related to:
    • BA Child Studies/Child & Youth Care
    • BA Education
    • Bachelor of Health Sciences
    • Bachelor of Human Services
    • BA/BSc Psychology
    • BA Sociology
    • Bachelor of Community Rehab
    • BSc. Family Studies/Human Ecology
    • BA Early Child Development
    • Law Degree
    • Any of the above degrees and one year of related experience
  • Or a diploma related to Addictions/Counseling, Child and Youth Care, Human Services, and Criminal Justice, with 2 years of related experience 
  • Or a certificate related and 3 years of related experience.

Related experience for equivalencies:

  • Case management and planning in a child intervention setting.
  • Crisis intervention and protection work.
  • Foster care.
  • Family preservation and family support.
  • Counselling youth.
  • Youth corrections work.
  • Child Care Program development (Teacher, Teacher Aide, Psychologist).
  • Experience and understanding Indigenous peoples, various cultures, community connections, and socially inclusive environments.

Other requirements include communicating effectively and concisely in writing and utilizing professional and inclusive vocabulary.

Creative Problem Solving: Ability to obtain information from many sources, analyze and interpret information to develop reports, and make decisions related to case planning.

Agility: Can prioritize competing for workload pressures while contributing to organizational goals.

Drive for Results: Demonstrates the ability to gather, integrate, and understand complex information sets, as well as achieve goals and priorities to produce results per departmental objectives and instructions: excellent analytical, evaluation, and critical thinking abilities.

Building Collaborative Environments: can work cooperatively and collaboratively with various teams within the business, community, and other Government ministries/agencies to fulfill client and ministry goals and objectives.

Developing Networks:  The ability to interact positively, build relationships and work effectively with others.

Develop Self and Others: The ability to invest in the long-term capabilities development of oneself and others.

Prerequisites for Employment

As part of the application process, you must complete and pass the following tests:

  • Written evaluation and assessment,
  • Professional and/or academic reference checks,
  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector,
  • Intervention Record Check,
  • Alberta College of Social Workers Registration (if applicable), and 
  • Provide a current 5 year Commercial Driver Abstract

The applicants are responsible for the initial costs of obtaining the above requirements.

Job Summary

Salary: $2,255.61 to $2,907.15 bi-weekly ($58,871 – $75,876/ year)

Work hours: Monday to Friday, 8:15 am to 4:30 pm (36.25 hours per week (full-time)). 

Closing Date: December 9, 2022

Travel Requirements: Because travel will be required in the CI Practitioner – Entry Level role, successful candidates will be required to provide a current five-year Commercial Driver Abstract. Additionally, when government fleet vehicles are unavailable, employees may be obliged to utilize their own automobiles.
