Requirements and information for candidates
If you get selected for the position of Cadet-in-Training, you will start a rigorous training program with some of Canada’s top instructors.
Among many other crucial abilities, you will learn defensive driving techniques, how to handle and use a firearm safely, and how to become fluent in provincial laws, the Criminal Code, and the Highway Traffic Act.
Some of the minimum requirements include the following:
- At least 18 years or older
- Permanent resident or Canadian citizen
- Physically and mentally capable of performing the position’s tasks, considering your own and members of the public’s safety.
- Completed at least four years of high school education or its equivalent
- You will need to submit your official transcripts and diploma, and if you completed your education outside Ontario, you must submit valid proof of degree equivalency.

Before submitting your application, if you attended secondary, postsecondary, or graduate school in a foreign country, you must contact an organization specializing in evaluating international credentials and obtain a document that attests to your qualifications.
Some of the additional requirements include the following:
- Do not have any criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted.
- Have a valid driver’s license with no more than six earned demerit points, allowing you to have full driving privileges in Ontario.
- Currently have a CPR certification and first aid by the time you receive an employment offer.
- Have a valid Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police Certificate (OACP.)
- Pass the OACP-specified hearing standards successfully.
- Have eyesight at least 20/40 (uncorrected), with normal colour acuity.
- Can pass a security clearance along with background investigation, credit and reference checks
- Pass the PREP (Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police) exam, and be physically capable of completing stage 7 of the Shuttle Run
Shift schedule details
Each shift’s duration varies and includes either 8, 10 or 12-hour shifts during the day, afternoon or night.
Applicants should note that Toronto police provide services to the community 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and even on statutory holidays.

How to apply For Toronto Police?
The general selection process has four stages, and applications are valid for a year starting on the submission day. If you do not hear back within a year of filing your application, you can submit a new application with the most recent certificates.
The four stages include:
1. Pre-Application Stage
There are a few things you should take into account before submitting your application. First, ensure you are a strong candidate and fit enough to complete the shuttle run successfully.
By clicking “Information Sessions Registration” and choosing the session date that works best for you, you may register for the online general information session and find out more. These sessions are held throughout the year.
Then, you need to obtain your OACP Certificate as follows:
- Register to complete the OACP assessment
- Get your final OACP Certificate of results at OACPCertificate.ca.
- Fill your medical forms with the appropriate physicians to confirm you meet the required hearing and vision standards (Forms available from OACPCertificate.ca)
- Maintain an ongoing fitness journal, you may be requested to submit the logs from the last two weeks at any time.
- Be physically fit to complete stage 7 of the shuttle run. Running 1.5 miles in 12 minutes and 10 seconds is an excellent indicator of your abilities.
Before January 1, 2020, OACP certifications will be accepted by Toronto Police Services, but all certificate components must be valid and have a valid OACP Certificate of Equivalency.
2. Application and Pre-Screening stage
You are ready to submit your online application if you have satisfied all the minimal criteria, obtained your OACP certificate, and completed stage 7 of the shuttle run. Here are your next steps:
- Register/Sign in to the TPS Careers page, Uniform Careers
- Choose the job posting you would like to apply for
- Complete your application and include all required documents and information
- Then, you will receive confirmation that your application was received.
- After submitting your application, you will be invited to participate in the Shuttle Run to evaluate your level of physical fitness.
If you complete step 7 of the shuttle run, you will receive an email inviting you to complete an online Pre-Background Questionnaire (PBQ) that includes the written Local Focal Interview questions.
In addition, you must submit information about any police contacts, driving history, credit history, digital/social media footprint, education history, employment history, alcohol and drug usage, and any criminal record as part of the PBQ.
3. Interview & Background Investigation stage
At this stage, you will prepare for your interview. The recruiters also provide an optional mentorship session to assist you. You must understand and embrace Toronto Police Service’s Core Values and Competencies.
Additionally, ensure that you maintain and build on your fitness level throughout this period, as your conditional offer will include additional physical testing. The next steps are:
- If you are chosen to proceed in the process, you will be invited to an optional Interview Mentoring Session to assist you in preparing for your interview. You will receive general information about the interview process, and the interview questions are on Toronto Police Service’s Core Competencies and Core Values.
- Then, a combined Essential Competency Interview (ECI) and Verbal Local Focus Interview will be organized for you.
- Two members of the Background Investigator team conduct the interview.
- If you are a suitable candidate, your file will move forward, and a Background Investigator will be assigned to your file.
- The background investigator will thoroughly investigate any criminal record, police contact, driving history, credit history, education history, work history, alcohol usage, and drug use.
- During this process, you may be requested to engage in the MMPI 2 – written psychological evaluation, which includes an additional in-person interview with a psychologist.
- A medical evaluation and report from a physician will also be required.
4. Getting a conditional Offer of Employment & Training
Applicants must pass a Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (PREP) test before receiving a conditional offer of employment or being deployed to the Toronto Police College.
To be successful and considered for a conditional offer of employment, applicants selected to perform the pre-hire testing must complete the Pursuit and Restraint circuit component of the PREP exam in 2 minutes and 37 seconds and complete the Shuttle Run to stage 7.
