1. The Child has to be your biological child (not adopted) to qualify.
2. You must have become Canadian Citizen prior to your child birth and not afterwards.
Processing time and Urgent Requests
The processing time for the proof of citizenship application at this time, as per the website, is 17 months. However, in case of emergency situations, there are provisions to apply with an urgent request. Additionally, you have a chance to state and explain your emergency situation, if you need the application to be processed earliest.
Upon, review by IRCC, the case will be assessed, if any documents are missing, IRCC will contact you. You will receive an acknowledgment letter once the application is reviewed. Finally, upon successful completion, you will receive a certificate of citizenship for your child.
How to apply?
The application for proof of citizenship is possible either paper based or online. Interestingly, one very important point to note is that the online application can only accommodate parent who became citizens on or after April 2009. For parents who became citizens prior to this, they must opt for the paper application.
The Canadian government application fee in both the method is $ 75. In both the methods, the major document IRCC look for is an evidence of parentage which can be demonstrated by child’s birth certificate. Subsequently, the other vital document is the evidence of parent’s citizenship which may include Citizenship Card, Certificate or Canadian Born Birth Certificate.
