Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) allows spouses of international students, work permit holders (NOC O, A, or B), or permanent resident applicants to apply for an open work permit. Common-law partners and Conjugal partners are also eligible to apply.
Benefits of SOWP
There are various benefits of having a SOWP like-
No need to take an English proficiency exam-— The spouse does not need to take any kind of English proficiency exam, like IELTS, to obtain a Spouse Open Work Permit.
Flexibility— One of the major benefits of SOWP is that it is not like any closed work permit. Closed work permits allow you to work with a specific employer. But with a SOWP the spouse is free to work anywhere in Canada for any employer. Moreover, there is no need to get any Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
Get Canadian Experience-—With a SOWP, the spouse has the advantage of getting Canadian experience even before getting a permanent residency in Canada. As a result, one can grow their career much more quickly in Canada and have a chance of landing better jobs once the PR is approved. Also, if things do wrong and the PR isn’t approved, Canadian experience would still be on the spouse’s resume.
Family Reunification— SOWP is one of the very few ways which allows spouses to live together with their partners. It is because of the SOWP, that partners are able to live together while waiting for a decision on their application.
Work full-time while you wait— The processing time of a spousal sponsorship application by the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is usually one year. Having a SOWP allows the spouse to stay and work in Canada while the application is being processed or until a final decision is made.
