IRCC has updated the complete details on new Canada H1B Open Work Permit for up to 3 years which opened for applications on July 16, 2023.
Duration of this open work permit depends on the expiry of passport. If your passport expires within three years, your work permit will also expire at the same time. There is no extension available after that.
Individuals in possession of a valid H-1B Specialty Occupations visa currently living in the United States are eligible apply.
As we know there is set quota of 10,000 for primary applicants, but there is no cap on dependent family members.
This new Canada H1B Open Work Permit stream closed on July 17, 2023 midnight since it reached the cap of 10,000.
IRCC processing fees is $155 per person plus you may have to give biometrics which usually costs $85.
Spouses or Common-Law partner or Dependent children are considered dependent family members.

These family members can accompany primary applicant on visitor visa, study permit, or work permit.
IRCC processing fees ($100 – $155 per person) as well as biometrics fees ($85 for each) will be charged extra and will vary depending on the type of application submitted by the family members.
If primary applicant stayed outside of the United States for at least 6 months in a row within the last 1 year, then they will need immigration medical exam (IME).

Canada H1B open work permit processing time
This new Canada H1B open work permit has a processing time of 6 weeks after you submit a complete application.
To given more context, IRCC processing times are usually average for 80% of finalized applications.
This means your application processing may be processed in less than 6 week or even can take longer than that.
IRCC has clearly stated that they will refuse the incomplete applications without processing it.
Biometrics which includes fingerprints and photo is required, so you will need to book an appointment to the earliest to avoid delays in processing.

How to Check Canada H1B Work Permit Application Status
After submitting complete application for Canada H1B open work permit, applicants will have to create an online account on IRCC’s “Your Application Status Tracker.”
Unique Client Identifier (UCI) and applicant number will be required to sign up for this application status tracker.
Primary applicants or their representative (or consultants/lawyers) are eligible to create account to check status of application.
After H1B Canada Work Permit Is Approved
Approved applicants will receive a letter of approval that states that they are authorized to work in Canada.
This letter is referred to as the port of entry letter of introduction.
When approved applicants travel to enter Canada, they will be required to show this letter at the port of entry.
However, this letter is not your official work permit. Actual work permit will be issued at the Canadian port of entry on the same day that approved applicants enter Canada.
This work permit will provide full conditions and duration of this new work permit.
