Statistics Canada released a report dated September 28, 2022 stating that Canada recorded highest population growth in any quarter (in terms of number of people) since the third quarter of 1957.
On July 1, the estimated population of Canada was 38,929,902, an increase of 284,982 (+0.7%) from April 1. Over the second quarter, there was an increase of more than 3,100 people per day.
The recorded number was the highest population growth rate in Canada since the addition of Newfoundland to the Confederation in 1949, resulting in the highest population growth rate since the third quarter of 1957 (+0.8%) during the height of the baby boom.

International migration accounted for 94.5% of this increase, resulting in 269,305 new residents. This increase was the highest from international migration since comparable records have existed, and it was 93,000 higher than the third quarter of 2019 (+175,907), the previous highest quarter on record.
Most of the increase in international migration came from the most heightened increase in non-permanent residents (+157,310) on record. In addition, it was due to many asylum seekers and permit holders (work, study, and other), including those displaced by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The number of immigrants observed in the second quarter of 2022 (118,114) was the highest recorded in any second quarter since comparable records have existed.
Moreover, the population growth is in line with recent increases in Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada targets. It could be the result of growth catching up after lower levels of immigration early in the COVID-19 pandemic.
Population estimates are based on the results of the 2021 Census will be released in September 2023, when the census coverage study results are available.
