List Of Canada’s Highest Job Vacancy Sectors For 2022!

Job vacancies have been rising in Canada.  According to the new Statistics Canada report, job vacancies in Canada rose to 957,500 in the first quarter of 2022. This has been the highest quarterly number on record. Also, the number of job vacancies has increased by 72.3%. 

Here are the sectors which have most job vacancies in 2022:

Health care and social assistance sector

The demand for the health care and social assistance sector has increased rapidly. This has been after the COVID-19 pandemic. There are 136,800 job vacancies in this sector. Moreover, more than half of the vacancies are in these sectors-

  • nurse aides, orderlies, and patient service associates
  • registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses
  • licensed practical nurses.


Construction sector

There have been around 81,500 vacant positions in the construction sector. So, there are over 5,400 more vacancies from the fourth quarter of 2021. Also, the occupations with the highest vacancies in this sector are

  • construction trades helpers and laborers, and
  • carpenters

Manufacturing and retail trade sectors

The manufacturing sector has seen 87,400 job vacancies in the first quarter of 2022. It has gone up by 5.3% from the fourth quarter of 2021. The highest increase has been in the following sectors-

  • food manufacturing, and
  • fabricated metal product manufacturing.

Talking about the retail trade sector, there were 114,600 job vacancies in the first quarter. The sectors with the highest vacancies are-

  • food and beverage stores
  • general merchandise stores

Accommodation and food services

There were around 133,800 vacant positions in this sector in Q1 of 2022. Also, this sector has seen one of the highest increases in vacancies since the first quarter of 2020. Despite the large number, it has actually decreased about 12% from the previous quarter. However, the number of vacancies continues to increase. This is because of the easing of public health restrictions related to COVID-19.

Professional, scientific, and technical services

Lastly, the number of job vacancies in this sector is 68,800 in the first quarter. This has been a 65.2% increase from the first quarter of 2020.
