PR Card Renewal, Replacement, Changes – Here Is How To Apply

If you have a Permanent resident (PR) card, you must know that it is valid for only up to 5 years.

You can always get a new PR card if your current card is about to expire.

Also, you can apply to get a new one if your card is expiring in less than 9 months. However, you are still a PR even if your card has expired.

  • want to renew your PR card,
  • want to replace a lost, stolen or damaged card,
  • did not receive your card within 180 days of immigrating,
  • want to change your gender designation on your card.
  • want to change the name on your PR card to reclaim your Indigenous name

How to apply for PR card renewal?

Step 1— Get the Application Package

Firstly, you need to do is get an application package. You will find this online on the IRCC website.

This will have a guide as well as all the forms. You need to complete these forms to apply for a PR card. Also, in your application include-

  • PR Card— Include a photocopy of it in the application. You can keep your current card. 
  • Passport— You must include a clear copy of your passport or travel document.
  • Photograph— Make sure you include two photos that meet the photo specifications.

Step 2— Pay your application fees

Secondly, you have to pay the PR Card application fees online. The fee for PR card renewal is $50.

To pay the fees, you need a PDF Reader and a printer. Also, you can make the payment using a credit or debit card.

Once you have paid the fees, print your receipt. Moreover, you will need to include that with your application. 

Step 3— Submit your application

Lastly, you need to submit your application. Make sure that you answer all the questions correctly.

You need to sign the application and other forms. Don’t forget to include any other supporting documents that are required.

You can submit the application online or by mail. The ​​Permanent Residence Portal lets you submit an application online.

The processing time for renewing your PR card is around 60 days. However, sometimes it takes longer to process the request.

So, make sure you renew it ahead of time before it expires if you want to travel outside of Canada.
