Canada Streamlines Passport Renewal Process With Automation

Last Updated On 26 April 2024, 9:30 AM EDT (Toronto Time)

Canada is expanding the use of validated automation technologies to streamline the processing of adult passport renewal applications.

Currently, the Canadian immigration department has been using automation tools to process various immigration and visa categories for foreign nationals.

The new passport applications, child applications, and complex files do not use automation; instead, the passport officers manually review them.

As per official notice, automated tools are an integral component of our steadfast dedication to the responsible utilization of technology.

Role of Automation Tool

Automation technology will assist passport personnel in processing routine adult passport renewals.

The automation tool validates that the applicant’s application information corresponds to the data stored in their previous passport.

Furthermore, the automation tool affirms that there are no impediments or justifications for the denial of a passport.

This supplementary application functions to enhance the workflow associated with passport renewals.

However, it is not a substitute for a passport officer.

According to the Canadian government, a passport officer always reviews the document to see if there are any unmet conditions.

The automation tool cannot deny the passport renewal; rather, a passport officer will review the application and issue denials if there are enough grounds to do so.

So an officer still makes decisions about passport refusal, cancellation, or revocation.

After conducting an algorithmic impact assessment, the department concludes that the tool in question presents minimal to no risk to Canadian citizens and comes with all necessary security and privacy measures.

By implementing this technology, the passport department will be able to maintain passport issuance in accordance with service standards, even during periods of high demand.

Canadian Passport Ranking 2024

According to the most recent Henley passport index, Canada stands among the leading countries in terms of mobility index for its passport.

Presently ranked seventh, the Canadian passport shares the position of the United States as the only passport requiring no visa or visa-on-arrival for entry into 188 countries.

In the Henley passport index of 2023, the passport secured the eighth position with its passport, after momentarily surpassing the United States to reach number six in September 2023.

New Canadian Passport Design

On May 10, 2023, Canada redesigned and unveiled a new passport design with cutting-edge security measures.

However, the rollout of new passports is still partial to keeping up with the older copies in the department’s inventory.

Peculiar features of new passports include a new cover page with an outline of a maple leaf.

Internal passport pages reflect the diverse people of the country, beautiful landscapes, and wildlife.

In addition, the forthcoming passport will incorporate enhanced security measures, such as a cutting-edge security feature comprising a polycarbonate data page.

Presently, this technology is also being employed to safeguard Canadian currency and driver’s credentials.

When did the new Canadian passport issuance start?

Later in the fall of 2023, Canada started the production of the newly redesigned passport and partial distribution started in 2024.

In the meantime, the current passport continues to be reliable and secure; therefore, Canadians in possession of valid passports will simply be required to renew them at the upcoming renewal period.

Should Canadians reapply for a redesigned new passport?

People who recently obtained or renewed a Canadian passport can use the previous version of the passport until it expires.
