The new Quebec minimum wage 2024 increase will come into effect on May 1, raising the general hourly wage to $15.75 per hour, an increase of 3.28% year-on-year.
Previously, the minimum hourly wage in Quebec was raised from $14.25 to $15.25 on May 1, 2023, which represented a $1 increase.
This new increase will benefit approximately 200,700 employees, including 111,200 women, according to the Ministry of Labour.
Additionally, the minimum hourly wage for tip-receiving employees in Quebec would increase from $12.20 per hour to $12.60 per hour.
Furthermore, raspberry pickers in Quebec will be entitled to a minimum payment of $4.68 (currently $4.53 per kg), while strawberry workers will be entitled to a new revised minimum pay of $1.25 per kilogram (currently $1.21 per kg).
The Government of Quebec minimum hourly wage policy has endeavoured to establish a 50 percent correlation between this remuneration and the average hourly wage.
This new augmentation will bring the ratio to 50.8%.
The new minimum hourly wage in Quebec will be significantly lower than the federal minimum pay of $17.30 per hour, which came into effect on April 1, 2024.
The economic uncertainty in the retail and restaurant sectors, which are undergoing difficulties, including closures, influenced Quebec’s decision to increase the minimum hourly wage by only 50 cents.
“A significant increase in wages would yield adverse consequences, including substantial strain on employers and the potential closure of retail and restaurant establishments […] and may have negative repercussions on the economy of Quebec,” Quebec Labour Minister Jean Boulet stated.
