On February 14, the Department of Finance unveiled new increased Canada Carbon Tax Rebate 2024 payments, rebranding the previously known Climate Action Incentive Payment (CAIP).
The department also officially released the Canada Carbon Tax Rebate 2024 payment dates and scheduled amounts based on the province of residence.
The Canada Carbon Rebate (formerly known as the Climate Action Incentive Payment) is how the federal government distributes the benefits of carbon pollution pricing to households in provinces that use the federal backstop scheme.
As per the Finance Ministry, the name has been changed to the Canada Carbon Rebate to clarify its purpose and make the meaning and tie to the carbon pricing scheme more understandable to Canadians.
The federal gasoline levy is imposed in provinces that request it or do not have a carbon pricing system that meets federal standards.
The direct earnings of the gasoline charge are returned to the jurisdiction where they were collected.
In provinces where the federal fuel levy applies, a family of four can earn up to $1,800 from the basic Canada Carbon Rebate in 2024–25.
The gasoline fee is in effect in the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Residents in these provinces will receive the first of four quarterly Canada Carbon Rebate payments in April 2024, with subsequent payments scheduled for July 2024, October 2024, and January 2025.
So beginning this April, a family of four will receive a Canada Carbon Tax Rebate payment of:
- $1,800 in Alberta ($450 quarterly);
- $1,200 in Manitoba ($300 quarterly);
- $1,120 in Ontario ($280 quarterly);
- $1,504 in Saskatchewan ($376 quarterly);
- $760 in New Brunswick ($190 quarterly);
- $824 in Nova Scotia ($206 quarterly);
- $880 in Prince Edward Island ($220 quarterly); and,
- $1,192 in Newfoundland and Labrador ($298 quarterly).
Starting in 2024–25, rural Canadians will get a 20% increase to the base Canada Carbon Rebate in acknowledgment of their higher energy consumption and limited access to cleaner mobility options.
To obtain the Canada Carbon Rebate, Canadians must file their annual tax return.
To obtain the rural top-up, rural people must mark the appropriate box on their tax returns.
Canadians who have enrolled in direct deposit with the Canada Revenue Agency will receive the Canada Carbon Rebate straight into their bank account every three months.
Otherwise, the rebate will be issued via check. For people who have a spouse or common-law partner, the first person to file their tax return will receive the Canada Carbon Rebate amount for all household members, including children.
