How to Tell if a Website is Trustworthy

In the modern world, digital hacks are on the rise. Every day, our news feeds are flooded with reports about mass data leaks and skilled hackers stealing both information and money from regular internet users.

Though the internet has brought humanity closer than ever, and allowed us to evolve in revolutionary ways as a species, it has also left us more vulnerable than ever before.

Digital threats are  something that affects all of us, and though it may be easy to dismiss a text from a number you don’t know or avoid a link sent in an email that got filtered into your spam folder, some fake websites appear genuine, and it takes a skilled eye to notice the cracks.

In this guide, we’ll explore some of the most effective ways to assess a website for its legitimacy in an attempt to better protect internet users from the ever-expanding world of digital threats.

Protective Measures

Before we examine how to identify the tell-tale signs of an illegitimate website, let’s first turn our attention to some of the most effective measures internet users can take to protect themselves while using the internet.

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)

With digital threats on the rise, it is advised that everyone invests in a good VPN. This software offers a major layer of protection between the internet user and any untoward individuals who may be seeking their personal information. In brief, a VPN works by encrypting an internet user’s location, making it appear as if they are browsing from somewhere else.

By doing this, a VPN makes it significantly more difficult for hackers to track individuals and, as such, denies them access to users’ information. VPNs also come with numerous other benefits, including allowing users to bypass geographical restrictions and reduce ping times. This is a significant asset for both gamers and streamers, as it often improves their internet connection and allows them to access content which has been released in other countries.

Cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrency, also referred to as digital assets, is a form of virtual currency that is rapidly gaining popularity across the globe. Crypto brings many benefits to a whole cohort of people, but perhaps the most important is its increased security when compared to other, more traditional, methods of finance.

Crypto is decentralized, meaning it does not rely on the input of third parties, such as banks, to operate. Instead, transactions are encrypted and pass through a massive public ledger known as the blockchain. Like with VPNs, this encryption makes it considerably difficult for hackers to trace a transaction to its source, keeping crypto users’ information secure.

Cryptocurrency has numerous applications in the modern world. Not only does its volatility mean that it can aid investors in turning a significant profit, but it can also be used with a number of retailers across the globe to purchase anything from clothing to houses.

On top of this, there are several different sectors that have rapidly adopted cryptocurrency, with the most successful among them being crypto casinos. These casinos come with a wide range of advantages for their users.

For example, Bitcoin casinos in Canada not only allow gamblers to wager and withdraw funds using Bitcoin, but they also allow for fast transaction speeds, low transaction fees and countless bonuses and incentives to both new and seasoned players.

Password Managers

In today’s day and age, it simply isn’t safe to reuse the same passwords. Luckily, recent technological developments mean that many phones, computers, laptops and tablets come with built-in password managers. These not only securely store their users’ passwords, allowing them to access all their information in one convenient and secure location, but they can even recommend complicated passwords for greater security benefits. All internet users should make use of this service, and should also take the time necessary to change any of their simple passwords on websites to ensure their internet security.

How to Assess the Legitimacy of a Website Independently

The creators of fake websites, designed to scam individuals, often out of their finances, have become more advanced than ever before. As such, internet users must become well-versed in how to spot these sites to avoid becoming a victim themselves.

Examine the URL

The first thing to do when attempting to assess the legitimacy of a particular website involves taking a look at the site’s URL. A lot of false websites have spelling errors in their URL as a way to avoid detection from authorities; however, this can be a significant giveaway for the illegitimacy of a website.

Additionally, internet users should look for strange and unusual domains, such as ‘.biz’ or ‘.info’, as these false websites are rarely able to establish themselves on well-known domains and so will settle on lesser known ones. On top of this, the ‘https://’, also often represented as a padlock, is a good indicator that your information is encrypted while you use the site, and therefore adds a layer of legitimacy to some websites.

Investigate the Site

If the URL seems legitimate and no alarm bells are ringing, the internet user should then go ahead and investigate the site. There are a number of things to look out for when doing this. First of all, they should fully explore the layout of the site, keeping an eye out for spelling mistakes, jarring or overly informal language or a general unprofessional appearance.

It is also a good idea to search for the websites’ “about us” section and to verify the legitimacy of their contact information. If this information is missing or appears nonsensical, then this is a significant red flag as to the legitimacy of the site itself. Finally, if the website is offering goods or services, it is recommended that all users locate and read its privacy policy and refund information. If this is missing or seems clumsily put together, then the site might not be as reliable as it first seemed.

How to Conduct Additional Research

Although exploring a website is an effective first step when it comes to assessing the legitimacy of a platform, an assessment shouldn’t end there. Scamming techniques have come a long way in recent years, and many hold incredibly well-designed web pages filled with content that can appear completely legitimate to the untrained eye. To spot these sites, internet users will need to conduct some additional research.

Internet Reviews

Firstly, it’s a good idea to search and read through any reviews that previous customers or service users have left about the website. The internet user should not seek out these reviews on the website itself, but on some third-party reputable website such as Trustpilot or Google Reviews. There are two things to look out for when doing this that could suggest the illegitimacy of the site.

The first and most obvious is customer complaints about not receiving their order, not receiving what they paid for or generally being unhappy about what the website provided them with. The second red flag is if no reviews about the website can be found, as this would suggest the site is new and may disappear once it has scammed enough people in a short period.

Company research

When approaching a new website, internet users should make sure to conduct thorough research on the overarching business so as to ensure their safety going forward. Look for social media pages, blog posts, LinkedIn profiles or whatever else can be found about the company and the individuals that form it. Additionally, it is a good idea to check whether the company is registered with any legitimate business authorities or licensing bodies.

Using Website Checkers

There are also a number of website checkers, offering both free services and paid plans that can check the legitimacy of a site, and these should be utilized by internet users. For example, Google has a safe browsing tool that allows users to search up a specific URL and discover whether Google has flagged the website for potential security issues.

On the other hand, those who have the budget for it could look into tools like Nord VPN that can conduct threat detection on websites that internet users are actively looking at to provide real-time insights into the legitimacy of the site.

Final Advice

When it comes to assessing the legitimacy of a website, there are a number of different things one can do. However, the main piece of advice we can give is encouraging internet users to trust their gut when it comes to suspicions surrounding websites. If something about a particular website doesn’t feel right, then there likely is a reason for this, and it’s better to look for a legitimate site offering a similar service than to take the risk.
