From the mountains to the sea, Vancouver offers no shortage of natural beauty combined with world-class urban life—which is why it’s ranked Canada’s most livable city.
However, all this charm comes with a price tag attached.
Vancouver’s cost of living is among the highest in Canada and globally, which means living in the city can be a financial headache.
For the finance-conscious Vancouverite, it can be a struggle to enjoy all the pleasures of the city.
However, there are plenty of affordable options to enjoy Vancouver that don’t involve emptying the bank account.
Table of Contents
Vancouver Public Library
The Vancouver Public Library is one of the best choices for budget-friendly entertainment. Whether it’s a speaker, a film, or a book club, the library offers plenty of opportunities for socializing and education. Take classes ranging from Photoshop to podcasting, enjoy a lecture from the Writer in Residence, and practice a new skill or language with friendly groups.
There’s even a new media studio available for public use. There are also film screenings, events with the 2025 Indigenous Storyteller in Residence, and traditional books and media for free use. The library even has musical instruments you can borrow, from violins to glockenspiels. There are also books and audiobooks available on the Libby app and free streaming movies on the Kanopy app. Both can be accessed for free with a Vancouver library card.
Museums and Galleries
Vancouver is home to many fine museums and art galleries. The Vancouver Art Museum offers free admission in the evening on the first Friday of every month. Book online to reserve a spot. The museum is also free for members, caregivers, and children under 18.
The Contemporary Art Gallery on Nelson Street is always free, as is the Equinox Gallery, the UBC Belkin Art Gallery and the Slice of Life, voted the best gallery in Vancouver by the Georgia Straight. Get on the mailing list for openings, talks and other free events. Local galleries are also a great place to find affordable art classes and life drawing nights.
Second-hand Shopping
One pleasant surprise for the thrifty Vancouverite is the city’s vast array of vintage and second-hand shops. Whether you’re in the market for gorgeous retro pieces or pre-loved designer accessories, there’s a second-hand store in Vancouver for that.
Commercial Drive and Main Street are the main sources for fine vintage clothes, with two standouts being Little Miss Vintage and Bohemia Gallery. Searching for something contemporary?
Turnabout Luxury Resale has exactly what’s needed. They’re stocked with everything from evening ensembles to chic everyday bags. Thrifters are likely to find a treasure or two at the Value Village or the Wildlife thrift store on Granville Street.
For those interested in saving money on reading, Vancouver also contains several bookstores where previously read books can be traded for credit or cash.
Keep books in circulation at Pulp Fiction, Kestrel Books and Cross and Crows and save a little money on a thrilling tale.
Festivals and Markets
Vancouver has a variety of festivals and markets that are free to attend and provide many types of affordable fun.
Try the Japanese cultural showcase of the Powell Street Festival or August’s Vancouver Pride Festival.
Italian Day on Vancouver’s Commercial Drive is also free, while the free-admission Khatsahlano street party on West 4th hosts revellers from all over the city and country.
If you’re in the mood for a market, Vancouver offers a variety to suit any taste. Try the Eastside Flea for fun vintage and crafts, then stop in at the annual Got Craft? market. Vancouver also hosts a variety of farmers markets in areas ranging from the Trout Lake area to Kitsilano.
These are great places to explore new types of food and vegetables. For an extra-special, affordable treat, pick up a few treasures at a farmers market, then have a picnic at the park, preferably somewhere with a view of the mountains.
The farmers markets can also come to your home with Vancouver’s community-supported agriculture (CSA).
Try City Beet, Glorious Organics or Container Brewing CSAs for locally grown vegetables and fruit. These save money and taste delicious.
Evenings In
Even the most avid city fan needs an evening in every now and then. Get some lovely takeout from a local place like Hastings Sunrise’s Bianca Maria Italian Deli and spend the evening watching movies on a free streaming platform like Tubi.
Other fun activities you can do online is learn a new dance or laugh at a pet video. Some Vancouverites are even skipping the night out at traditional brick-and-mortar casinos like the River Rock and Parq and hopping online to check out Canadian casinos with expert reviews instead.
These platforms offer all sorts of perks like welcome and loyalty bonuses that make them an excellent option for those who want to play without overspending.
Parks
Part of the pleasure of Vancouver is its plethora of green spaces, which its residents love to spend time in.
From the iconic and relaxing Dude Chilling Park to Jericho Beach, city parks and beaches offer an affordable way to enjoy the great outdoors.
Pack a picnic lunch and spend time outside on grass or by the sea. For an urban oasis, try the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, which provides discounted rates for seniors and families, as well as an affordable yearly pass.
For more green spaces, consider a membership at the Bloedel Conservatory and the VanDusen Botanical Garden, both of which offer free admission to members and offer discounts to seniors and children.
