Canada Immigration has now moved the Pearson Test of English Core (PTE Core) acceptance anticipated time frame to early 2024.
Previously, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) posted that they were anticipating accepting the PTE Core English proficiency test for immigration programs by late 2023.
However, this anticipated time frame has now moved to early 2024. Only Pearson Canada, Inc. is the approved organization in charge of administering PTE Core.
Readers often confuse this with the PTE Academic test for the SDS (Student Direct Stream) study permit or visa, but PTE Core is only for permanent residency: economic immigration programs.
Simple PTE Academic is still eligible for SDS study visas and permits since August 10, 2023, along with three other new English proficiency tests.
Economic programs include all the Express Entry categories, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), Caregivers, Agri-Food Pilot, Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP), Economic Mobility Pathways Project(EMPP), Atlantic Immigration Program, Quebec Skilled Workers, and Business Class.
Expected PTE Core Test Score CLB-Level Equivalency
The Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels for immigration to Canada are used to test English proficiency.
The IELTS General CLB levels for Canadian immigration are listed below.
| CLB Level | Reading | Writing | Listening | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 8.0 | 7.5 | 8.5 | 7.5 |
| 9 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 8.0 | 7.0 |
| 8 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 7.5 | 6.5 |
| 7 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 |
| 6 | 5.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 | 5.5 |
| 5 | 4.0 | 5.0 | 5.0 | 5.0 |
| 4 | 3.5 | 4.0 | 4.5 | 4.0 |
The potential PTE Core CLB level scores that we calculated using a comparison of IELTS scores are listed below:
| CLB Level | Reading | Writing | Listening | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 84 | 76 | 89 | 76 |
| 9 | 66 | 66 | 84 | 66 |
| 8 | 56 | 56 | 76 | 56 |
| 7 | 46 | 46 | 46 | 46 |
| 6 | 29 | 36 | 36 | 36 |
| 5 | 18-20 | 29 | 29 | 29 |
| 4 | 15-18 | 18-20 | 23 | 18-20 |
The minimum language requirement for the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) Express Entry is CLB level 7 in all four abilities.
To qualify for the FSWP, each IELTS module needs to have six bands. Depending on the score comparison, a score of 46 or above could be required in the PTE Core.
The PTE comparable score for the IELTS magic number of 8 triple 7—eight in listening and seven in the remaining modules—could be 84 in listening and 66 in the remaining skills.
Similarly, CLB level 5 is the minimal language requirement for the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) Express Entry.
Therefore, 18 or above in reading and 29 or above in the remaining modules would be the potential PTE equivalent score for CLB level 5.
PTE Score Requirement for Express Entry Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
| CLB Level | Possible PTE Scores | IELTS Scores |
|---|---|---|
| CLB Level 7 for TEER 0 or TEER 1 jobs | 46 in each module | 6 in each module |
| CLB Level 5 for TEER 2 or TEER 3 jobs | 15–18 in reading and 29 each in rest of the modules | 4 in reading and 5 each in rest of the modules |
