The new IRCC GCKey multi-factor authentication came in effect on July 31, 2023, to secure the personal information of applicants by preventing unauthorized access to an account.
So beginning today, all applicants or their representatives will need to set up this new multi-factor authentication if they are creating a new account to apply using a GCKey or using their existing GCKey to sign in to your account.

How do I set up new IRCC GCKey Multi-Factor Authentication?
You can choose one of the multi-factor authentication methods being offered by IRCC in your GCKey account.
Using a smartphone, tablet, desktop, or laptop
This is the recommended method of authentication by the IRCC and requires a free authenticator app to be downloaded from the Play Store or App Store.
After logging in to your GCKey account, you will be prompted to provide your email address or register a device for multi-factor authentication.
You will have to choose here to register your device, which can either be a tablet or a smartphone.
After this, you will see the QR code and the secret key on the screen. You can scan this QR code (if using a smartphone or tablet) or manually enter the secret key in the authenticator app installed on your device.
This will generate a 6-digit passcode in the authenticator app. Enter this passcode on the GCKey authentication screen and click continue’ to confirm authentication.
Using an Email Address
After signing in to your GCKey account, you will be prompted to register an email address or device for multi-factor authentication.
Enter your email address and click on ‘continue.’ Following this, IRCC will email you a 6-digit passcode.
Input this passcode on the GCKey screen and select ‘continue’ to confirm your authentication.
Important Information After Confirming Authentication
Following the confirmation of your multi-factor authentication method, IRCC will display five recovery codes.
If you lose or harm your device, or if you delete or reinstall your authenticator app, you can use these codes, so save them somewhere accessible and secure.
Registration is complete once you affirm that you have safely stored your recovery codes.
