CAN Work Philippines: New Canada Work Permit Program For Filipinos

Last Updated On 19 October 2023, 12:55 PM EDT (Toronto Time)

Today, Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced the opening of a new Canada work permit pilot program called CAN Work Philippines at the visa office in Manila.

The pilot will speed work permit processing for qualifying Canadian firms and allow employers to plan group appointments for potential employees’ medical checks and biometrics.

This is an employer-driven pilot program and is open to Canadian firms bulk hiring 50 or more workers from the Philippines or for key jobs in industries such as health care, construction, and agri-food.

Canadian firms interested in learning more about the CAN Work Philippines pilot program will need to send an email to IRCC at promotion@cic.gc.ca

As per the IRCC press release, Canada takes seriously its obligations to protect temporary foreign workers so employers must demonstrate their commitment to the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) fair and ethical recruitment requirements in order to participate in the program.

In addition, IRCC is donating $200,000 to the IOM to help the Philippines adopt fair and ethical recruitment criteria.

The financing will allow the IOM to work closely with the Philippine government, organize training sessions, and promote the IOM’s Fair and Ethical Recruitment Due Diligence Toolkit to organizations active or interested in recruiting talent.

The Philippines is a key partner in Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy and a major source of newcomers to the country.

These activities will improve our two countries’ close social links while solving crucial labour shortages in the Canadian economy and solidifying Canada as a top destination for global talent.

The Philippines has historically been an important immigration source country for Canada.

According to the 2021 Census, there are 960,000 individuals of Filipino descent in Canada.

Filipinos are also among the most common recipients of work permits. For the first six months of 2023, Filipino nationals received one out of every ten Temporary Foreign Worker Program employment visas.

On June 6, 2023, Canada announced the expansion of its Electronic Travel Authorization Program to include the Philippines, providing more Filipinos with visa-free air travel.

The Department of Migrant Workers of the Philippines and the IRCC’s visa office in Manila are co-organizing the Philippines-Canada Friendship Week, which will highlight the close social ties between the two countries and promote Canada as a preferred destination for Filipino workers.

It will be held in Manila during the week of October 23rd and will include information sessions about working in Canada, testimonials from Filipino workers, photo exhibits, a film screening, and a tasting booth where visitors may try Canadian food.

How much is the Canada work permit processing time from the Philippines?

As per the most recent IRCC processing update, the estimated processing time for a Canada work permit from the Philippines is approximately 14 weeks.
