Canada Student Loan Forgiveness Opens March 16 For 10 New Professions

New Canada Student Loan Forgiveness Applications Open March 16

Last Updated On 15 March 2026, 10:03 AM EDT (Toronto Time)

Teachers, social workers, and eight other professions can now apply for up to $30,000 in federal student loan forgiveness starting March 16, 2026.

The Government of Canada expanded the Canada Student Loan Forgiveness program to include 10 new occupations effective December 31, 2025.

Online applications through the National Student Loans Service Centre will begin processing on March 16, 2026.

Paper applications submitted before this date will also begin processing at that time.

This expansion represents one of the most significant changes to federal student debt relief in Canadian history, with an estimated 7,968 borrowers benefiting in the first year alone.

By 2034-2035, up to 19,025 borrowers per year could receive loan forgiveness through this expanded program.

The program targets professionals working in communities with populations of 30,000 or fewer, which represents approximately 11.2 million Canadians or about 30% of the national population.

The 10 New Professions Now Eligible For Loan Forgiveness

The expanded program now includes professionals who work in eligible communities across Canada with populations of 30,000 or fewer.

These ten professions join family doctors and nurses who have been eligible for loan forgiveness since 2013.

For comparison, family doctors remain eligible for up to $60,000 over five years, while nurses and nurse practitioners can receive up to $30,000.

The government increased maximum forgiveness amounts by 50% in previous years, demonstrating ongoing commitment to reducing barriers for healthcare and education professionals in underserved areas.

The forgiveness applies only to the federal portion of your Canada Student Loan.

Provincial student loans, private student loans, and lines of credit converted from student loans are not eligible for this federal program.

If you have both federal and provincial student loan debt, contact your provincial student aid office to inquire about separate provincial forgiveness programs that may be available.

You can work in multiple eligible communities during the year and still qualify.

You can work for more than one employer as long as you meet all other eligibility requirements.

This requirement ensures the program benefits professionals actively serving their communities, not those working remotely or in administrative roles.

You cannot apply if you are restricted from receiving federal student financial assistance.

However, you can apply if you are restricted only because you have received repayment assistance or if you are bankrupt but have kept your Canada Student Loan in good standing.

Critical Deadlines You Cannot Miss

Understanding the timing requirements is essential for a successful application.

The 90-Day Application Window

Applications must be submitted within 90 days of completing your eligible work period.

Missing this 90-day deadline means your application will be refused.

You will need to wait and apply again for the next eligible period if you miss the deadline.

If Your Work Period EndsYour Application Deadline Is
March 31, 2026June 29, 2026
June 30, 2026September 28, 2026
September 30, 2026December 29, 2026
December 31, 2026March 31, 2027

Loan Forgiveness Period Start Date Requirement

Your loan forgiveness period must have started on or after January 1, 2025 to qualify under the new occupations.

If your employment began before January 1, 2025, that earlier period cannot be claimed under the new rules.

Time worked during 2025 does count toward your eligibility requirements.

Potential Delays for Educators

The Canadian Teachers’ Federation has noted that some educators may not become eligible until June 2026.

This potential delay arises from the 10-month consecutive work requirement for those working in schools.

Teachers who began their current school year in September 2025 may not complete 10 consecutive months until June 2026.

The CTF-FCE is actively advocating with the federal government to address this regulatory timing issue.

Despite this uncertainty, educators should apply at their earliest convenience once they believe they are eligible.

Provincial Loan Forgiveness Programs

Some provinces offer additional loan forgiveness programs that stack with federal benefits.

The March 2026 changes represent one of the most significant expansions of student debt relief in Canadian history, and online applications open in just days.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I receive loan forgiveness if I work part-time in an eligible community?

Yes, part-time work can qualify as long as you meet the minimum 400 hours of in-person service requirement and complete the required employment period of 12 months or 10 consecutive months if you work in a school setting as a teacher, social worker, psychologist, or early childhood educator, with your total hours from all part-time positions combined counting toward the threshold.

Does receiving student loan forgiveness affect my credit score or ability to get a mortgage?

No, receiving loan forgiveness through this government program does not negatively impact your credit score because the debt is being officially forgiven by the federal government rather than being written off due to non-payment or default, and lenders will see the reduced balance as a positive reduction in your debt-to-income ratio when assessing mortgage applications.

What happens if my community’s population grows above 30,000 after I start working there?

Communities that were previously eligible remain eligible until the 2026 Census data is implemented, which is expected to occur in 2027-2028, giving workers and communities time to adjust to any changes in eligibility status, and if you are already receiving forgiveness in that community you may continue to be eligible under legacy provisions.

Can international students who became permanent residents apply for this program?

Yes, permanent residents who completed their studies in Canada and have Canada Student Loans can apply for forgiveness if they work in an eligible profession and community and meet all other program requirements, including holding the appropriate professional license or registration in their province and maintaining their loan in good standing.

Is there a limit to how many professionals from one workplace can receive loan forgiveness?

No, there is no limit on the number of eligible professionals from a single workplace who can receive loan forgiveness as long as each individual meets the program requirements independently, which means an entire school staff of teachers or a rural hospital’s complete nursing team could all receive forgiveness simultaneously if they each qualify.
